Strengthening accountability of women and young political leaders in BiH – the role of woman in public and political life - PHASE 2

Description: USAID BiH and Council of Europe are realising a 21-month long Programme entitled “Strengthening accountability of women and young political leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina”. The Programme was initiated in September 2011 and will last until June 2013. Programme activities are realised in two directions in order to provide the best possible support to stronger inclusion of women and youth into political processes in BiH.

General objective: the program is aimed at strengthening women and youth to take a more active role in political processes, which will help create a new and more responsible generation of political party leadership, in the run-up to the 2014 general elections. This includes raising awareness of the importance of women’s participation in political processes and strengthening their engagement in political life.

Specific objectives:

1) Increasing the involvement of women in political processes;
2) Creating a new and more responsible generation of political party leadership; and
3) Improving inter-party communication on issues important for the country’s progress towards
Euro-Atlantic integration.

Phase II activities are carried out in cooperation with 18 NGOs and 27 coordinators in 42 cities / municipalities throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, and about 18,000 participants in the workshops are expected. It is also important to note the results of Phase I of this project. The activities were carried out in the period 2011-2013 in cooperation with 21 NGOs and 50 coordinators, 350 workshops were organized with 15,000 participants.

The results of these activities are as follows:

– 124 women – participants in the workshops became councilors of municipal / city councils, at local ones
2012 elections
– 520 women – participants in the workshops became members of local community councils in 2013.

LDA Mostar activities planned for 2013-2015

LDA Mostar, in cooperation with the coordinators, will implement project activities in the Herzegovina-Neretva and West Herzegovina Canton / County, in the City of Mostar and the Municipalities of Konjic, Jablanica, Posušje, Široki Brijeg, Ljubuški and Grude. A total of 10 workshops will be organized for 800 participants in the period until the 2014 general elections.
